Syllabus Commentary

Time required: Short

Grading: not required

Disciplines: any

Why: to support students reading, writing, and reflective practices; also can be used to inform future teaching

What to Do:

After students have reviewed the course syllabus, ask them to respond

How:

  • Students review the syllabus
  • Ask them which unit they are most excited about and why.
  • Next, ask them which unit they are most dreading and why.
  • Ask what surprised them being being part of the syllabus.
  • And vice versa, what they thought would be in the syllabus and isn’t

Variations:

  • Ask other students to respond to an “excited” post with different reasons
  • Ask other students to respond in an encouraging way to a “dreading” post
  • Allow anonymous posts
